MATCHA
Matcha is a type of green tea, which is shaded toward the end of the growing season. This shading period makes it unique and provides its iconic vibrant green color. It is known for being the only tea where the whole leaf is consumed, helping to make it a nutritional powerhouse. It is rich in antioxidants and may have protective health benefits. If you would like to learn more about this healthy beverage read on at the About Matcha page.
The bright green color of our matcha comes from chlorophyll alone. At the end of the growing season, our leaves are shaded for 3-4 weeks, which stimulates increased chlorophyll production as the leaves seek out the sun. The vibrant color signifies a high quality and nutrient-dense profile. There are never any added colors or fillers. In any of our teas or matcha.
An easy way to determine the quality of matcha is to look for a vibrant green color. Color is a great indicator of matcha quality, the more vibrant, the better. Lower quality matcha becomes dull by comparison and oftentimes, the lowest grade matcha will be brownish green.
All our matcha is imported directly from Japan. For many of our matcha offerings, we partner with a fourth-generation, family-operated farm run by a female businesswoman. She has a factory in the Kyoto prefecture with stone mill grinders on site. This ensures the matcha particles are finely ground, resulting in a smoother texture, rich aroma, and ideal flavor profiles that are then freshly packed and airfreighted to Tov Tea.
Store matcha in a cool, dry location in an airtight container to preserve freshness. Prior to opening, you can store it in the fridge or freezer. It is recommended to store matcha in an airtight, UV blocking, and smell-proof container to protect it from absorbing any food smells that can impact the matcha. This will also prevent condensation from damaging the matcha powder. It is best to allow the matcha to come to room temperature naturally before opening and using it.
Yes, matcha is a single ingredient that starts as green tea leaves. The green tea leaves are dried to make tencha and ground to create matcha. These tea leaves are naturally vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free.
No, our matcha does not contain sugar. We believe it should be utilized in its purest form and the consumer can always add natural sweeteners based on preference. Please know there are other matcha brands that include added sugar.
One teaspoon of matcha powder, a typical serving, contains approximately 2-3 calories. These calories come from the ground tea leaf itself.
CHAI
Chai originated in India; it is a beautiful, warming beverage thought to have healing components. Tov Tea’s chai is a combination of Sri Lankan spices and Indian black tea. Oftentimes, it is brewed with milk and takes on a latte form. Alternatively, it can be enjoyed as a tea steeped in water. In Hindi the word “chai” means tea and although it has ancient roots, it’s still a comforting ritual today. If you would like to learn more about this rich beverage read more at the About Chai blog posts.
Tradition dictates some key aspects of this ancient Indian beverage. The fragrance should be strong, rich, and aromatic. You want the spice blend to be balanced and the black tea of high quality. After brewing, the color should be deep and reddish-brown, and the tea should not be overly sweet.
